2010-2011 BC Care Member of the Year: Marilyn Slade
At this year's annual BC Care Providers Association Conference and General Meeting, Marilyn Slade of Vancouver's Carital Continuing Care Society was recognized with the 2010-2011 BCCPA Member of the Year Award. Villa Carital" is a non-profit residential care facility in Vancouver that serves approximately 80 seniors a day. Marilyn has been running that facility for the better part of a decade and has faced many complex challenges over the years to ensure Carital's ongoing success. However, Marilyn's sphere of influence stretches far beyond Villa Carital. She has made a real impact on the quality of our seniors care system in the province.
Weather it has been in her role as President of this Association, Chair of the Vancouver Coastal Health's Admistrator's Group or on HEABC's advisory committee, Marilyn has not been afraid to speak her mind and stand up for all care providers - regardless of the circumstances. Before moving off the BCCPA Board this year, Marilyn served as the Association's President and Conference Committee Chair.
The Member of the Year award is presented to a member of the BC Care Providers Association that has made a significant contribution to the success of the association. The award was presented by last year's winner, Zion Park's Tom Crump. In recognizing Marilyn, Mr. Crump said, "In the last year, we have got our money's worth out of Marilyn. She helped lead our advocacy efforts to secure mitigation for the HST and was an outspoken critic of how the Health Care Benefit Trust was treating care providers and increasing fees. Again, she stood for her own facility and care providers across the province. And again, the government got the message. As a result of her tough stand, and many others in this room, we are much closer to finding a health benefit solution today than we were just five months ago. Please join me in thanking Marilyn for all of her hard work to improve the quality of seniors care in our province not just over the past year - but over her entire career. Thank you Marilyn and we look forward to many more."
