A coalition of care providers, seniors, families and health care professions held their first meeting in Campbell River last week to address a growing seniors care crisis in Campbell River. At the heart of the problem in North Island communities is growing number of seniors waiting for long term care in the local hospital, which residential care beds are sitting empty in the community. Officials from the BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) also attended the meeting is support of the Coalition. In their December 2009 Action Plan, BCCPA recommended that the government take action to fill empty residential care beds in the province with seniors waiting in acute care to promote efficiency and improve quality of care.
