Statement by the BC Care Providers Association in response to the release of BC Ombudsperson's First Report on Seniors Care

The following is a statement from BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) President Christine Nidd in response to the release of the BC Ombudsperson's Part One Report on Seniors Care earlier today:

"On behalf of care providers across British Columbia, we want to thank BC's Ombudsperson Kim Carter and her team for the work they have done to prepare this comprehensive analysis of our sector. We look forward to part two this spring.

BCCPA has been very supportive of the Ombudsperson's systemic investigation of the seniors' care system in BC. Many of our members have welcomed her into their facilities to provide a front-line account of the many complex challenges care providers are facing across the province.

While BCCPA will release a full response to the report in January, it is clear from her recommendations that the Ombudsperson has listened to care providers.

Her focus on the need for more transparency in health authority operations and the uneven funding rates for seniors' care across the province is very welcome and reflects recommendations BCCPA made in our report to Health Minister Kevin Falcon earlier this month on ways to improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of our seniors' care system.

BCCPA is committed to working with the provincial government to renew our seniors' care partnership. We want to make sure the Ombudsperson's recommendations are lifted from the pages of this report and put into action for the seniors we serve."

BCCPA has represented health care leaders in BC for over 30 years. BCCPA members employ more than 7,000 people. They care for over 10,000 seniors each day in residential care and an additional 4,000 each year through home support.
